Spot the Setup: What Even Counts as Gambling?
Use the stake-plus-chance-plus-prize framework to classify any product on the gambling spectrum.
2 of 5 mastered
Overview
Self-paced study flow — not the projector or class assignment view. Read the pages, then complete the check when you are ready.
You will spend the next 30 minutes on one question:
When does a product cross the line into being structurally a gamble?
By the end you will be able to apply a single three-part framework to any product a student is likely to encounter. You will use the framework on Pokemon packs, CS2 skins, and a sportsbook app, and decide for each whether the product is gambling-like, regardless of how it is marketed.
This is the foundation. Every other lesson in the Recognition unit assumes you can apply this framework on demand.
What you will be able to do
- Define gambling using the stake + chance + prize structure.
- Place common digital products on a gambling spectrum, not just a yes/no label.
- Explain why branding ("game", "skill", "free", "social") does not change the structure.
- Translate a youth-specific product into adult-readable terms before applying the framework.
How long this takes
About 30 minutes if you read straight through. Each page has a short knowledge check you can try as you go; those do not count toward mastery. The 6-question check at the end is the one that does.
Outcomes
- Define gambling using the stake plus chance plus prize structure.
- Place common digital products on the gambling spectrum.
- Recognize that the framework does not depend on branding or licensing.
- Translate a youth-specific product into adult-readable terms before applying the framework.
