How Apps Exploit These Tricks

Map each cognitive distortion to a specific sportsbook design feature - live in-play, “risk-free” framing, streak displays, personalized odds, push notifications - and run the Reasoning capstone audit.

From Distortion to Design

The map between each cognitive distortion and the specific product feature it gets activated by - and why the relationship is structural, not accidental.

A good way to read a sportsbook app is to ask a single question on every screen: which cognitive distortion from Lesson 4 is this element targeting? Almost every visible element answers the question. Once you can read the screens this way, you stop seeing them as products and start seeing them as engineered attempts to activate specific reasoning errors.

This page is the map. The next three pages walk specific feature sets and what each one is aiming at.

The map

The product side has known about cognitive distortions for at least as long as the academic side has. Schull (2012) traced how slot designers in the 1980s and 1990s began explicitly engineering features around the loss-disguised-as-win effect, the variable-ratio reward schedule, and the near-miss response. Newall (2025) extended that taxonomy to modern online sportsbook design, and Wardle and colleagues (2024) treated it as a public-health concern in the Lancet.

For our purposes, the key insight is that the relationship between distortion and design is not accidental:

  • Variable ratio reinforcement maps to randomized rewards (loot boxes, gacha, slot reveals).
  • Near-miss effect maps to deliberate two-of-three displays and slow-reveal animations.
  • Loss disguised as a win maps to celebratory sound effects on net-loss outcomes.
  • Illusion of control maps to live in-play betting, DFS lineup construction, "cash out" features, and same-game parlay builders.
  • Gambler's fallacy and hot hand fallacy map to streak displays, "due" trend overlays, and "hot" team highlight reels.
  • Confirmation bias maps to social proof, friend leaderboards, and "most popular bets" widgets.
  • Chasing losses maps to "quick re-bet" buttons, push notifications after losses, and instant deposit on the loss screen.

Every common product feature on a U.S. sportsbook home screen is on this map somewhere. None of these are accidents.

Why this is the bridge to Pathway 3

Reasoning (Pathway 2) is internal: it is about what the bettor's brain is doing. Influence (Pathway 3) is external: it is about what the world around the bettor is doing. Lesson 5 is the hinge between them.

The platforms exploit the distortions, the marketing reinforces the platforms, the social environment reinforces the marketing, and the bettor's environment becomes a saturated field that targets the same six reasoning errors from many directions at once.

A student who finishes this lesson should be able to look at any sportsbook screen and ask, in order:

  1. Math. What is the EV here? (Lessons 1, 2.)
  2. Edge. Is the bettor's actual skill big enough to overcome the operator's pricing? (Lesson 3.)
  3. Distortion. Which cognitive error is the screen activating? (Lesson 4.)
  4. Tactic. Which design feature is doing the activating? (This lesson.)

The four-question stack is the Reasoning audit. The next pathway adds the marketing and the social environment.

A teaching note

The temptation in this lesson is to make it sound conspiratorial. Resist that. The product teams running modern sportsbooks are not villains plotting against students. They are engineers and designers who run A/B tests, measure deposits and time-in-app, and ship the features that win those tests. The features that win those tests are also, predictably, the features that target known cognitive distortions, because those features increase engagement and revenue.

The mechanism is structural, not malicious. That distinction matters because it is the right diagnosis. Naming the distortion target is what teaches the lesson; framing it as villainy makes the lesson easier to dismiss as agenda-driven.

Opening prompt

Before turning to the specific feature walkthroughs on the next pages, ask the room:

"If you were the product manager at a sportsbook, and you were measured on bets per session and total deposits, what features would you ship? Be honest. What would actually move those numbers?"

The list students produce is almost identical to the actual feature set of FanDuel and DraftKings. That is the point. The features are not exotic; they are the predictable result of optimizing for the operator's KPIs.

Why does the lesson frame the distortion-to-design relationship as structural rather than malicious?
