Lesson 5 of the Reasoning Unit

The previous four lessons named the math (1, 2), the skill-versus-edge problem (3), and the cognitive distortions that explain why bettors keep playing anyway (4). This last lesson closes the loop: the platforms know all of the above, and the products are deliberately engineered to activate the distortions in real time.

This is the bridge from Reasoning to Influence (Pathway 3). By the end of the next 35 minutes you will be able to walk a real sportsbook screen and explain which cognitive distortion each design element is targeting - live in-play layout, "free bet" framing, streak displays, personalized odds, push notifications, and the rest of the modern surface.

Once you can name what the product is aiming at, the felt pull weakens.

What you will be able to do

  • Map each of the six cognitive distortions from Lesson 4 to a specific product feature on a real sportsbook or social casino.
  • Explain why live in-play betting is engineered around the illusion of control.
  • Decode "risk-free" and "boost" framing as targeted exploits of loss aversion and confirmation bias.
  • Run the Reasoning capstone: produce a one-page audit that combines EV math, edge analysis, distortion naming, and platform-tactics naming on a single product.

How long this takes

About 35 minutes. Each page has a short knowledge check you can try as you go; those do not count toward mastery. The 6-question check at the end is the one that does.

Outcomes

What you'll learn
  • Map the six cognitive distortions from Lesson 4 to specific sportsbook product features.
  • Explain why live in-play betting is engineered around the illusion of control plus the near-miss effect.
  • Decode “risk-free” and “boost” framing as targeted exploits of loss aversion and confirmation bias.
  • Produce a one-page audit combining EV math, edge analysis, distortion naming, and platform-tactic naming.
