Warning signs in plain language

Nine DSM-5 criteria translated for classroom use.

The nine DSM-5 criteria for gambling disorder double as a spottable warning-sign set:

  • Preoccupation — thinking or talking about bets, odds, or "next time" a lot.
  • Tolerance — needing to bet more to get the same feeling.
  • Chasing losses — betting to win back what was lost.
  • Lying about gambling or hiding how much.
  • Restlessness when trying to cut back.
  • Repeated failed attempts to stop or control gambling.
  • Jeopardizing relationships, school, or work because of gambling.
  • Escape-motivated gambling — betting to feel better, not for fun.
  • Relying on others for money because of gambling losses.

The NC guidebook maps these across financial, academic, emotional, relational, physical, and legal life domains in plain language students can use.
