Overview
Self-paced study flow — not the projector or class assignment view. Read the pages, then complete the check when you are ready.
Lesson 4 of the Recognition Unit
You can spot the framework, the products, and the mechanics inside the activity. The last piece is the design of the app itself - the patterns that pull users in, the friction that keeps them from leaving, and the framing that makes any of it feel low-risk.
This is the dark patterns lesson. By the end of the next 35 minutes you will be able to walk through a real sportsbook screen and name the three categories of structural design choice operating on each element: dark patterns (UI that nudges toward operator-favorable choices), sludge (friction in the way of user-favorable choices), and dark nudges (framing that makes gambling feel fun, social, or low-risk).
Once you can name a pattern, it stops working. That is the whole bet of the Recognition unit.
What you will be able to do
- Name 3+ dark patterns used in betting and gaming apps.
- Identify sludge in withdrawal, opt-out, and self-exclusion flows.
- Recognize dark nudges that frame gambling as fun, social, or low-risk.
- Audit a real app screen using a four-signal scan (defaults, speed, framing, social proof).
- Combine the full Recognition framework into a one-page audit students can produce on demand.
How long this takes
About 35 minutes. Each page has a short knowledge check you can try as you go; those do not count toward mastery. The 6-question check at the end is the one that does.
