Welcome

Is this gambling?

Spot a gamble when it is dressed up as a game, a hobby, or a smart buy.

1

Go with your gut. Sort a stack of real situations fast, before you learn any rule.

2

Learn the rule. One quick test tells you if something counts as a gamble.

3

See the gap. Find out where your gut was off, and where even experts cannot agree.

You get three buckets:

← left
Not a gamble
↑ up
It's complicated
→ right
Gambling

Yes, "It's complicated" is a real choice. A lot of stuff lands there, and that is the interesting part. Swipe a card or tap a button.

Go with your gut

No rule yet. Just throw each card into a bucket, fast. There are no wrong answers here.

The Gamble Formula

Something is a gamble when all three of these are true at the same time.

Stake

You put something of value at risk.

+

Chance

Luck, not just skill, decides what happens.

+

Prize

You can win something of real value.

The answer is the structure, not the packaging. Stake, chance, and prize. If all three are there, it is a gamble, no matter what it is called.
"But I am actually good at it." Maybe you are. But if luck still decides who wins in the end, being good does not save you.

Where your gut was off

The point was never the sorting. It is the cards where your gut and the rule landed in different spots.

You guessed one way. The rule says another.

Lightning round

True or false. This checks the traps, not the obvious ones.

Nice work

Next time something wants your money, run the test: stake, chance, prize. If it has all three, it is a gamble, no matter what they call it.
